Bread pizza on a tawa
The weekend pizza of Indian homes, made on bread: slices spread with pizza sauce and topped with onion, capsicum, sweetcorn, paneer and plenty of cheese, then cooked on a tawa under a lid until the cheese melts – no oven needed. With an OTG, bake them at 200 °C for 8–10 minutes; on a ready pizza base it is made the same way.

Ingredients for 4 portions
- 12 slicesBread, sandwich bread
- 3 tbspButter
- 150 mlReady-made tomato sauce, pizza sauce
- 1Onion, finely chopped
- 1Capsicum, finely chopped
- 100 gSweetcorn, frozen or boiled
- 100 gPaneer, in small cubes
- 200 gMozzarella, grated
- 1 tspOregano, dried
- 1 tspChili flakes (optional)
Method
- Finely chop the onion and capsicum, cut the paneer into small cubes and mix them with the sweetcorn. Grate the cheese.
- Heat a tawa on low-medium heat. Lightly butter the bread slices on one side and toast them butter side down until golden, 1–2 minutes, in batches.
- Spread the pizza sauce over the toasted sides, scatter over the vegetables and paneer, then the cheese, and sprinkle with oregano and chilli flakes.
- Brush the tawa with the rest of the butter and put 3–4 bread pizzas on it, topping side up. Cover with a lid and cook on low heat for 5–6 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the base is crisp. Cook the rest the same way.
- Cut each bread pizza in half and serve hot.
