Toasted ham and cheese sandwiches
Sandwich bread filled with ham and cheese and toasted with butter in a toastie maker or frying pan until the cheese melts – a common light dinner in Uruguay, where sandwiches are often the evening meal. In Argentina it is a tostado; it is also made in pitta bread, with tomato or with a fried egg.

Ingredients for 4 portions
- 16 slicesBread, sandwich bread
- 3 tbspButter, softened
- 250 gHam, sliced
- 250 gHard cheese, sliced
- 2Tomatoes, thinly sliced (optional)
Method
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Lay half the slices butter side down and top with the ham, cheese and tomato, if using. Cover with the remaining slices, butter side up.
- Heat a toastie maker or a frying pan over a medium heat. Toast the sandwiches in batches, 3–4 minutes in the toastie maker or 2–3 minutes per side in the pan, pressing down with a spatula, until golden and the cheese has melted.
- Cut the sandwiches in half diagonally and serve hot.
