Baked pasta with ham and cheese
Short pasta mixed with white sauce, ham and mozzarella, baked under grated cheese until golden – a filling bake that children love. Some add sweetcorn or peas.

Ingredients for 4 portions
- 400 gPasta, short pasta such as penne
- 3 tbspButter
- 5 tbspPlain flour
- 800 mlMilk
- to tasteNutmeg
- to tasteSalt
- to tasteBlack pepper
- 200 gHam, diced
- 200 gMozzarella, diced
- 60 gGrated cheese
Method
- Heat the oven to 200 °C. Cook the pasta in plenty of salted water for 2 minutes less than the packet says.
- Meanwhile, make the white sauce: melt the butter in a saucepan, stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Whisk in the milk a little at a time and cook, stirring, for 6–8 minutes, until thickened. Season with nutmeg, salt and pepper.
- Drain the pasta and mix it with the white sauce, ham and mozzarella. Tip it all into an ovenproof dish and sprinkle with the grated cheese.
- Bake in the middle of the oven for 20 minutes, until golden and bubbling on top.
- Leave to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
